    Elwood Fluid Power wins order for Gränges America Mill Expansion

    Gränges America, an Aluminum Rolling Mill, has awarded Elwood Fluid Power with an order to provide the hydraulic stands in the expansion occurring in the Huntingdon, Tennessee facility. Elwood Fluid Power has had a long-time presence in the mill since providing the stands for the first expansion in the late 1990's. The mill expansion will allow the Huntingdon facility to position itself as one of the most modern and efficient rolling mills in North America. Earlier this year the expansion was announced by Gränges to be completed and in operation by 2019. Elwood Fluid Power designs and manufactures high pressure hydraulic valves and systems for water, soluble oil, and other low viscosity applications. The primary markets include steel and aluminum mills, petroleum decoking, and forging press industries.

  • Custom Stainless Steel Cartridges

    Overview

    A customer using water presses in their facility was looking for a product that would increase the length between maintenance times on a cartridge, and lower the overall inventory cost.

    Application Problem

    The customer was changing out a conventional oil hydraulics counterbalance valve monthly. A lot of time was spent replacing the cartridges, and a sizable inventory was kept due to the high turnover rate of the components. The current part they were using was designed for use in a conventional oil hydraulics system, and did not stand up to the highly corrosive water environment.

    Elwood's Solution

    Elwood was able to evaluate the existing system and design a custom stainless steel cartridge that fit into the existing cavity of the counterbalance valve. After testing, the components were able to extend the life of the cartridge exponentially and successfully decrease the amount of inventory needed to support the cartridges.
